12/9/2023 0 Comments Shohei ohtani stats![]() Ultimately, he may resume his dual roles as a top of the rotation pitcher, and impactful designated hitter. If he can remain healthy, and his elbow does not hamper his swing or his ability to pitch in the future, Ohtani could eclipse Judge’s contract.įor the 2024 season, Ohtani’s initial suitors will be looking at Ohtani as a designated hitter only. It must be remembered that Ohtani has not yet reached the age of 30. Given the massive contract Judge signed, what might Ohtani fetch in the open market? Judge, 31, signed a 9-year, $360 million contract that runs through 2031. In 458 plate appearances, Judge had 16 doubles, no triples, 37 home runs, and 75 RBIs. This year, Judge played in only 106 games due to a severe toe injury. They are seen as two of the greatest sluggers in modern baseball history. Ohtani is often mentioned in the same sentence with New York Yankees All Star, Aaron Judge. Trout made only 362 plate appearances in 82 games played. Remarkably, Ohtani accomplished that magnificent offensive season with All Star Mike Trout out of the lineup due to injury. Not everybody, however, truly knows the numbers.A three-time All Star, even though he threw 132 innings on the mound, covering 23 starts, Ohtani had 599 plate appearances with the Angels in 2023. Stanton is of course a right-handed batter, and Ohtani is a left-handed batter.Įverybody has been marveling at Shohei Ohtani’s season that has made him easily the AL MVP up to this point. Therefore, he doesn’t believe anyone could hit a ball harder than Stanton, who consistently maxes out at 121 mph, and Ohtani just came close. clNmxxz0ac- Mike Petriello April 7, 2021 This is even funnier when you realize he's played 45 total games the last three seasons. Giancarlo Stanton now owns the hardest-hit ball of every regular season and spring training that there's been tracking for. He points out that Giancarlo Stanton hits the hardest-hit ball of every year and every spring training too. That only dates back to 2015, when they began tracking that, but Petriello believes that it indeed is the hardest-hit ball ever. That was the hardest-hit baseball ever tracked by a lefty hitter. On April 12th, Ohtani smacked a 119 mph double vs. Petriello also found that Shohei’s made similar history on the offensive side. Shohei Ohtani, 97mph Fastball (foul) and 91mph Splitter (Swinging K), Overlay. A perfect way to display what happens when a hitter tries to hit the splitter: Petriello included this tweet in the MLB.com article. It looks like his famous four-seam fastball almost the whole time, but drops 19 inches as soon as a hitter tries to commit to a four-seamer. ![]() It does drop substantially, but it’s the timing that does it. Petriello pointed out that it averages just under 88 mph, which is nice, but not spectacular. Ohtani’s splitter is the best right-handed pitch ever recorded. Indeed, the only two ahead of him were left-handed pitchers. Petriello found that Ohtani’s splitter has been the third-best of any of those recorded. He’s never given up a single tank from the splitter in his whole career.Įver since pitch tracking started in ’08, a pitcher has thrown a certain pitch 400 times or more almost 4,500 times. This year, Ohtani’s chucked that splitter 196 times, and only given up six hits. Baseball Savant found that it was the most dominant right-handed pitch in baseball. Mike Petriello did his research, and gathered that in 2018, Ohtani gave up just two hits on his splitter despite throwing it 191 times. I’m serious, and if you don’t believe me, check this out: Shohei Ohtani gives the LA Angels the nastiest splitter of all time. Shohei Ohtani’s season has been even more superhuman for the LA Angels than you think. Crazy things is the numbers get even better. He can play the field, and he has a 3.49 ERA on the mound, while striking out 11.7 batters per nine innings as the Halos’ Ace. He leads the league in homers and slugging percentage, second in OPS, and third in RBI (despite being our second-hole hitter). He’s even hit four triples up to this point. He’s driven in 69 runs and scored 63 of his own. ![]() Ohtani is the best hitter of this season, as well as one of the better pitchers in the game. Shohei Ohtani has been sensational for the LA Angels this season, to say the least.
